Malefia, the final (and my favorite) dimension of the game. Doesn't have the
coolest puzzles or story, but awesome monsters (and items)! So here is some info about those.
All graphics are from the C64-version, which is widely acknowledged to be the best one.
Screenshots made with the excellent emulator VICE.
The very nice Bard's Tale Compendium has
lots of stuff, including the important spell-list (from the manual).
Maps are included in this
walkthrough by Richard J. Hutchison. I pimped the malefia-maps to
include recommended (by me at least) ways to the statues. Boring areas where
you don't need to go are greyed out. Get it here.
And here is a layered codewheel, which I found to be more reliable than all the textual explanations or tables.
It is easiest to first activate/rotate the middle and then the top layer. I do it with the gimp.
The only thing about the table that might need explaining is the distance where A means that
the monsters will advance and the number after that says how fast.
The level column says on what level of the dungeon the monster can be
encountered.
I didn't bother to record the damage done by monsters with the stoning or
critical-hit ability - dead is dead ;-)
Some monsters have special magic-resistance, for example the Gremlin, Vortex and, of course, Tarjan himself.
They proved to be immune to SPBI too, so I had to walk around until one offered to join voluntary.
Hitpoints are not always precisely fixed - I suspect that even 9999 doesn't actually mean 9999 but that only the display is capped.
The most rare monster, apart from the end-battle-uniques, seems to be the Hell Fiend, which is not very spectacular otherwise.
And here's the wikipedia-page for this fantastic game,
which has eaten up more of my childhood-time than any other computer game.

A very nice item to have here is the Deathhorn, because it can eliminate the magic-resistant Vortexs in one go. Since you don't need any more XP at this point feel free to cast EAMA to get rid of whole groups. A DIVA each round is also suggested, to be on the safe side. But be wary that 3.2 follows directly after 3.1, with no chance for any actions between them. No healing, harmonic-gem-use, party-reordering, etc. If you're a wimp you can cast PREC in the last battle to prevent Tarjan from summoning 10 fresh Black Slayers each round - but with AC -50 and maybe a little LUCK they should pose no real threat. It's a little weak that he doesn't do anything else... except getting backstabbed, of course ;-)
